Clerkenwell Design Week 2017
25th May 2017
Well, half way through the second day at Clerkenwell Design Week and the sun is shining and there’s still plenty to see. A couple of highlights from my visit this year has included Icon Magazines ‘Icon House of Culture’ which occupied Fabric nightclub. Sponsored by Bang & Olufsen, the club’s impressive brick vaults, once the cold store of Smithfield Market, featured a careful selection of top international design brands including Artemide, Dare Studio and John Hollington Design.
This years CDW has a spectacular array of product launches, including the new Landmark collection of taps and showers that we’ve designed for long term client Samuel Heath. This new collection was being exhibited at the ‘Detail’ exhibition in the beautiful Order of St John’s church, St John’s Square.
In addition to the regular exhibition spaces and participating showrooms, there are a number of installations including the stunning structures pictured below:-
Hakwood have installed a double panelled interactive structure in Clerkenwell Close and Perspex have constructed ‘The Beacon’, located at the entrance to Design Fields. Inspired by the Tower of Babel, the 7.5m-tall structure has an internal staircase encased in a typographical design that celebrates multiculturalism. Visitors can climb the staircase to a viewing platform that overlooks where industrial Clerkenwell meets the historical.
The organisers have everything covered this year, you can even take a ride around the festival in one of the colourful fleet of Renault Twizys that have been laid on so that you can rest those weary feet!
An inspiring day out.
