Meet Anthony McAllister
Tell us about yourself.
I was born in Cardiff and have lived in Wales my entire life although in my early adult years I had aspirations of moving to somewhere like New York or Chicago. I studied Product Design and Engineering at the University of Wales and since a very early age had a very keen interest on things ‘looking nice’. Immediately after graduating from University I worked as a brand/graphic designer for a number of well-established design and multimedia agencies around the city but I have always had a strong affiliation with the client side of the design process. With this, I started engaging more and more with clients, networking and participating in client meetings as a means of problem-solving and creating a high level of customer experience.
What about your personal life?
From a personal point of view, I have been married for just over 4 months, having tied the knot in Cheltenham at the beginning of the summer 2015. We have a very energetic 1-year-old son (the next Gareth Bale) and a very comical and inquisitive 4-year-old daughter who has just started school. We like to keep the kids active as much as we can and are about to ‘invest’ in their first set of golf clubs this coming Christmas.
What are your passions?
As well as having an obvious passion for design I have always had a keen eye for fashion and tailoring. Whilst I was a student I worked for Ralph Lauren as a suit tailor and was always keen to transfer the customer services skills I had obtained from their intense training methods and transfer into my design career. I love music and have always had keen ear for electronic music such as house, progressive and ambient. Now I am getting that little bit older I am more likely to be listening to the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett as a consequence of my fathers’ heavy childhood influence.
The worst job you’ve ever had.
The worst job I have had was undoubtedly my first. It was a paper round that actually paid pretty well in comparison to my mates’ rounds at the time as it was in the Llandaff part of the city. Unfortunately though the route took me through the cathedral graveyard in the very early hours of darkness which prompted me to cycle as fast as I could with my headphones blasting to distract me from anything my imagination would conjure up.
What do you do when you are not in the studio?
I am a pretty active guy and with the 2 kids it is not often that I get the opportunity to sit still for very long. I have recently been very interested in DIY and have just spent most of the summer decorating the garden and freshening things up. I enjoy High-Intensity Interval Training in the evening as a means of keeping fit and I often find myself wandering aimlessly on Pinterest into the early hours looking at virtually everything and anything.
Tell us what you like about working at Sanders.
Since studying Product Design and Engineering at University, Sanders have always been on my radar and the type of company that I had aspired to work for. The quality of work is, and has always been of an exceptional standard. What has always particularly drawn me to the company is the perfect blend of both product design and brand principles. What I have particularly noticed this first week is the very welcoming nature of the studio and the fantastic relationships that they have established with their broad range of clients. I am very keen to scope out the opportunities that this role will provide and am very excited to be attending Ambiente, Frankfurt in February 2016.
I am extremely enthusiastic to help develop Sanders further and with the fantastic portfolio of work to present and diverse skillset we have to offer I am very excited about what opportunities may emerge.
