The Loneliness of The Long Distance Runner. Part 1. 14.08.13
OK, so I’ve been coerced and cajoled into taking up running by a small group of people that, until this point, I’d regarded as ‘friends’. ‘Why take up running at this time in your life?’ I hear you ask. Well, its all in the name of charity - but more of that in later blogs. My first big ‘event’ is the Cardiff Half Marathon’. 13.5 miles of purgatory!
This event which has grown into one of the largest road races in the United Kingdom.
It first took place back in 2003 and is now not only the U.K’s second largest half marathon, but Wales’ largest road race and Wales’ largest multi-charity fundraising event.
The race is sponsored by Lloyds TSB and supported by strategic partners, Cardiff Council, Welsh Government, Vale of Glamorgan Council and Welsh Athletics.
The course encompasses some of Cardiff’s most iconic landmarks including Cardiff bay, The Senydd (Welsh Parliament building designed by Richard Rogers), The Millennium Stadium and Millennium Centre.
Needless to say, I’ll not be alone, there’ll be around 18,000 others joining me on the 6th October (64 days to go!) as we wend our way through Wales’ capital city.
So, the countdown starts here. I’ll be blogging regularly over coming months, keeping you updated on my ‘training regime’ and whether at my time of life, and current level of fitness, I’m able to keep it all together!… Watch this space!
