Julian and Dubai 04.03.14
Just back from a brief break in Dubai… a somewhat sunnier climate that we’re experiencing here at the moment, although the sun is actually shining as I write this.
Staying on the 37th floor of a downtown apartment block, we had stunning panoramic views of the coast and ‘The World’ or ‘World Islands’, the artificial archipelago comprising various small islands constructed in the rough shape of a world map. Its located about 4.0 kilometres off the coast and is composed mainly of sand dredged from Dubai’s shallow coastal waters,
The project originally conceived by Sheikh Mohamend bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the current ruler of Dubai back in 2003 is constructed of 300 separate islands. Apparently, 60 percent of the islands have been sold off to private contractors but only two of the islands have been developed, although plans to begin development on six in the European region, labeled ‘Heart of Europe’, is scheduled to commence this year.
