How Products We Design Shape the World Around Us

Marshall McLuhan said, "We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us". Is he right? Are things just things, or are they more than that? As product designers, of course we believe that they are more. The 'things', or tools that we surround ourselves with shape the way we live, how we interact with our environment, how we behave, in some cases taking on great personal significance and meaning, even changing the way we feel about ourselves.
